A coaster

coaster with hearts.

What are the suitable yarns for coasters:

Cotton yarns are most suitable. They can withstand more temperature ranges than wool, acrylic or silk yarns. With high temperatures, silk or acrylic yarns may tend to melt.  Further, they are not slippery and more stable than others which are made out of wool, acrylic or silk yarns. But, if stains are made on them not easy to remove. It is easier in coasters made out of acrylic yarn. But cotton coasters take time to dry.

The thickness (not the roughness) of the yarn has to be considered because the thickness of the coaster depends on the thickness of the yarn. If it is not much thick it may not prevent making stains on the polished surfaces of tables. But the yarn should be smooth, if it is rough the surface may not be even and the stability of the holding object may get disturbed.
When you make coasters you can make sets of 6 or 12 with the same colour and same pattern. If you want you can sell your finished products and can earn money from them.
You can sell any product you create thrice of the money you spent plus 3% of it.
Needed things: bamboo cotton yarn, 3 mm hook,

Before starting the work learn how to do 3 incomplete double crochets and 4 incomplete double crochets.

These 4 incomplete double crochet stitches are flat and broad stitches and have pointed ends. So, they look like flower petals.

3 incomplete double crochets (incomp. dcs):

Yarn over (yo) insert the hook and pull up the yarn and release two loops. Again yo insert the hook to the same place and pull up the yarn and release two loops. Again yo insert the hook to the same place and pull up the yarn and release two loops. Now there should be 4 loops on the hook. Release all the loops at once. Inserting three times means 3 incomplete dcs.
4 incomplete dcs: If you insert 4 times and do the same procedure above it will be 4 incomplete dcs. Here, there should be 5 loops on the hook to be released at the end.
Now the coaster,

Make a magic circle or ring.

It will add a feminine look to the women's wear. Most ladies buy machine knitted laces. But they are not much expensive than crocheted things. It is very expensive if it is a handmade crocheted item. So, there is a good market for you if you learn crocheting.

There are so many designs of edging laces, very fine, thin laces which are crocheted by fine threads. Sometimes, broader ones are crocheted with thicker yarns.

Beautiful Crochet Edging Lace Pattern – Full Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Crochet edging is one of the most popular ways to decorate clothing, home décor items, and handmade gifts. A simple border can transform a plain fabric into a beautiful finished piece. In this tutorial, I will teach you how to crochet an elegant edging lace pattern that looks delicate but is very beginner-friendly.

This lace pattern is worked from the bottom to the top, creating a clean, flat edge that can be added to skirts, pillowcases, dresses, table runners, baby blankets, and even sarees. The design uses basic crochet stitches, so anyone can make it—even if you are new to lace crochet.

This is a wonderful project if you want something quick, pretty, and practical.

Benefits of Making Crochet Edging

Adding a handmade crochet border offers many advantages:

  • Makes your clothing and décor look more elegant
  • Strengthens the edges of fabric projects
  • Helps customize old or plain garments
  • Easy to adjust length based on your project
  • Great for beginner crocheters to practice stitches
  • Suitable for gift-making and craft sales

If you enjoy small projects that give beautiful results, this edging lace is perfect for you.

 Materials You Will Need

To crochet this edging lace, you will need:

Yarn / Thread Options

  • Crochet cotton thread
  • Light acrylic yarn
  • Lace-weight or fingering yarn

Using thinner thread gives a delicate lace look, while slightly thicker yarn creates a textured, bold border.

Hook Size

Choose a hook size suitable for your thread or yarn.
For example:

  • Size 1.5mm–2.5mm for cotton thread
  • Size 2.5mm–3.5mm for fine acrylic yarn

Other Tools

  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Measuring tape (optional)

Crochet Stitches You Should Know

This pattern uses simple stitches:

How to Make the Lace Look Even More Beautiful

To enhance the final look:

✔ Block your lace

Spread your lace flat, pin it down, and lightly steam or spray it with water. This opens up the shells and V-stitches beautifully.

✔ Use matching thread

If sewing onto clothing, match your sewing thread to your lace color.

✔ Starch for crisp edges

A little starch helps lace keep its shape, especially for sarees and table linens.

Where to Use This Crochet Edging Lace

This border is extremely versatile. You can add it to:

  • Sarees and shawls

  • Pillow covers and bedsheets
  • Table runners and mats

Alpine stitch

A sample of the alpine stitch
Sample of the Alpine stitch

The Alpine Stitch is a beautiful textured crochet stitch that creates a raised, three-dimensional pattern. It looks detailed and luxurious, but it’s surprisingly easy to learn once you understand the basic steps.

If you enjoy making warm, thick, and cozy projects, this stitch is perfect for blankets, scarves, cushion covers, and winter wear.

🧶 What You Need

  • Medium-weight yarn (or any yarn you prefer)
  • Crochet hook suitable for your yarn
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle for finishing

This stitch works best with solid colours so the texture stands out clearly.

Why Choose the Alpine Stitch?

Thick and warm texture
Beautiful raised zig-zag effect
Beginner-friendly once you know fpdc
Perfect for blankets, scarves, and home décor
Doesn’t have large holes — great for winter projects

🧵 How to Crochet the Alpine Stitch (Step-by-Step Tutorial)

The Alpine Stitch is worked using single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), and front post double crochet (fpdc).

🔸 Step 1: Make the Foundation Chain

Chain an even number of stitches,  according to the width of your project
This keeps your rows even and the pattern balanced.

🔸 Step 2:

Row 1 Make 1 chain, then make a single crochet row over it.

Step 3:

Row 2: Then make one chain, turn it, and make another single crochet.

over it.

 🔸 Step 4:

Row 3 – Double Crochet Row

Make one double crochet for each stitch across the single crochet row.
This sets the foundation for your texture.

3rd row of double crochet
3rd row of double crochet

🔸 Step 5: Row 4 – Single Crochet Row

Turn your work.
Chain 1, then work one single crochet in each stitch across.

with the 4th row of single crochet rows

This creates a tight base for the textured stitches.

🔸 Step 6: Row 5 – Start the Texture

Turn your work again.
Chain 3 (counts as first dc).

Now repeat this pattern across:

DC, FPDC, DC, FPDC…

    Showing front post dc
    Showing front post dc

Make 3 chains, yarn over, and insert the hook down and around the 1st dc and bring it up between

the 1st and 2nd dcs as shown in the image. Then pull the yarn and release two loops, then pull the

yarn and the other two loops.

  • Then a normal double crochet goes into the normal stitch
  • The front post double crochet goes around the dc from Row 1
(skip the sc row — you’re working around the post)

This is the row that creates the beautiful Alpine texture.

🔸 Step 7: Row 6 – Single Crochet Row

Repeat a row of single crochet across.

This makes the texture stand out more clearly.

🔄 Repeat Rows 5 and 6

Continue alternating:

  • Row 6: Chain 3, turn, and DC + FPDC pattern
  • Row 7:Chain 1,turn,  SC across

The alpine stitch grows quickly and forms a thick, soft fabric.

💡 Tips for Perfect Alpine Stitch

Keep your tension even for a clean zig-zag pattern.
Use a hook slightly larger if your fabric feels too stiff.
Choose smooth, non-fuzzy yarn so the texture is clearly visible.
Block your finished piece lightly to straighten edges.

🎀 Where to Use the Alpine Stitch

This stitch works beautifully for:

  • Baby blankets
  • Winter scarves
  • Hot-water-bottle covers
  • Cushion covers
  • Sweater panels
  • Table runners
  • Tote bags

Its unique raised pattern gives any crochet project a premium look.

🌸 Final Thoughts

The Alpine Stitch is one of the easiest ways to add gorgeous texture to your crochet work.
With just single crochet, double crochet, and a simple front post stitch, you can create a professional, modern design that looks far more complex than it really is.

Try this stitch in your next project — you’ll love the result!
