crochet information

                                         CROCHET INFORMATION

1. How to select and buy yarns and hooks

Please think bout the project you are going to do first. Then the suitable materials and hooks for that project. For e.g. cotton or synthetic yarns. Wool or normal yarn, Yarns suitable for baby items.

If you are going to use several different colours in your project you have to select the colours matching each other. Likewise, you have to think specifically according to your project

Then the needed amount of yarn. Yarn skeins can be found with different masses (number of grams) normally 50 g or 100 g You have to think of that when you calculate the needed amount

Selecting the correct hook size is also very important if you use a large size hook for a thin yarn the finished item will be too loose with more holes. As small size hooks, there are 2mm,3mm, 4mm, etc.

After deciding on these you can buy them from your local shop or from an online market. If you are going to do online marketing you can download apps that direct you to online markets.  Then you can find the items you want. You can select from a wide array of colours, according to your liking. There are prestigious brands. Same for the hooks.  After payment is done they will deliver the items to your doorstep. But please deal with trusted companies

Selection of hooks. The main rule is, for thin yarns select small size hooks. The hook size is given in millimeters on the shaft of the hook.  small hooks have fewer millimeters. (1mm, 1.5 mm 2mm, 2.5 mm 3mm)

For thick yarns like woolen yarns select large-sized hooks. 4mm, 4.5, or 5 mm hooks.

Some hooks are made out of aluminium metal. Some are ergonomically designed. These handles are designed for easy handling for long periods. Some are lighted crochet hooks. You can search different types and buy online.
3. What is a gauge of a  project?
For example, in a pattern, if they talked about
4"x 4" crocheted square, with any kind of yarn, gauge describes
"How many stitches need to get 4" across and how many rows it took to obtain 4" height".
So, you have to find the gauge of your yarn. That is, "How many stitches need to get 4" across and how many rows it took to obtain 4" height".
So, if any given pattern asks to make a 20 " long piece of chain as the circumference of your neck, you have to find the number of chains needed to get that length of 20 " with the yarn you have.
Say for example, for a given yarn, if 4" equals 30 chains, then you have to make 150 chains to get a 20" piece of chain.
           (30/4) x 20 =150

Coaster 2.

                         VINTAGE COASTER.
I think you know the term vintage. If some thing is categorized as vintage it will be a high quality thing from the past. Today we are going to make such type of thing. That is a coaster. Coasters are small sized placement mats which can hold small bottomed things like bottle, glasses and cups and sauces. Those days many well to do families used these in their homes. Not only doilies, but so many ancient crocheted items were also there.
Those days there were so many books on crochet, displaying photos of vintage crochet. I have one book with me which was given by my mother. There were housecoats and night dress patterns with crocheted yokes. So many edging laces, baby frocks, baby bonnets, table cloths, bread spreads are among them.
Now, today's work, Let me explain the method of crocheting the coaster.
Make 8 chains and join to the 1st ch with a slip stitch.

Round 1:  Make 3 ch and 19 dcs to the ring of 8ch. There should be 20 dcs. (19 ch +  beginning 3 chs.)

Round 2: Make 4 ch and 1dc into the next dc below. " 1ch, 1dc" repeat from " to " . At the end 1ch and join to the 3rd ch of the beginning 3 chs with a slip stitch.

Round 2
Round 2

Round 3: Make 6 ch and make 1 dc to the next dc below. Then make 3 ch and make 1 dc to the next dc below. " 3 ch, 1 dc "  Repeat from " to " until you come to the end. In the end, join the 3rd ch of the beginning 3 chains with a slip stitch.

Round 3
Round 3

Round 4: Make 3ch and make 3 incomplete dcs to the ch 3 space below. Then ch 3 and 4 incomplete dcs to the next ch 3 space below.

"ch 3,4 incomplete dc"  Repeat from   " to "   until you come to the end. At the end, join to the top of the set of 3 incomplete dcs, with a slip stitch.

Round 4
Round 4

Round 5: Then make 4ch and 2 treble crochet (trc) into the ch3 space below.  Then 2ch and 3 trc to the same space. Then join to the next ch 3 space below with a single crochet.

"3trc, ch2, 3trc 1sc to the next ch 3 space". Repeat from " to " until you come to the end.At the end, join to the 3rd ch of the beginning 3 ch with a slip stitch.

Round 5
Round 5
Round 6: Make  5 ch and join to the ch 2  space of the shell below. Then make 5 chs and join with sc to the same space. 7chs and join with sc to the same space, 5chs and join with sc to the same space. Then make 5ch and join to the sc below with a slip stitch.
"(5ch,1sc, 5ch,1sc 7ch 1sc, 5ch 1sc,) to the same space of shell. 5ch 1sc to the sc below". Repeat from "to" the end. Fasten off.
If you use a thin yarn or thread you can have a fine flower and you can use it to decorate your tops and frocks.

A coaster

Crochet kit for beginnerscoaster with hearts.

What are the suitable yarns for coasters:

Cotton yarns are most suitable. They can withstand more temperature ranges than wool, acrylic or silk yarns. With high temperatures, silk or acrylic yarns may tend to melt.  Further, they are not slippery and more stable than others which are made out of wool, acrylic or silk yarns. But, if stains are made on them not easy to remove. It is easier in coasters made out of acrylic yarn. But cotton coasters take time to dry.

The thickness (not the roughness) of the yarn has to be considered because the thickness of the coaster depends on the thickness of the yarn. If it is not much thick it may not prevent making stains on the polished surfaces of tables. But the yarn should be smooth, if it is rough the surface may not be even and the stability of the holding object may get disturbed.
When you make coasters you can make sets of 6 or 12 with the same colour and same pattern. If you want you can sell your finished products and can earn money from them.
You can sell any product you create thrice of the money you spent plus 3% of it.
Needed things: bamboo cotton yarn, 3 mm hook,

Before starting the work learn how to do 3 incomplete double crochets and 4 incomplete double crochets.

These 4 incomplete double crochet stitches are flat and broad stitches and have pointed ends. So, they look like flower petals.

3 incomplete double crochets (incomp. dcs):

Yarn over (yo) insert the hook and pull up the yarn and release two loops. Again yo insert the hook to the same place and pull up the yarn and release two loops. Again yo insert the hook to the same place and pull up the yarn and release two loops. Now there should be 4 loops on the hook. Release all the loops at once. Inserting three times means 3 incomplete dcs.
4 incomplete dcs: If you insert 4 times and do the same procedure above it will be 4 incomplete dcs. Here, there should be 5 loops on the hook to be released at the end.
Now the coaster,

Make a magic circle or ring.

magic circle

Edging lace 3

Edging lace 3
crown lace

Edging laces are very common among women's dresses all over the world. Among women, it is a fashion that cannot be stopped. From one generation to the next generation it inherits from mothers to daughters or grandmothers to granddaughters.
It will add a feminine look to the women's wear. Most ladies buy machine knitted laces. But they are not much expensive than crocheted things. It is very expensive if it is a handmade crocheted item. So, there is a good market for you if you learn crocheting.
Not only women's wear there are so many places you can attach these. Where there are edges you can attach these and can get a nice finishing.
So, what are the places where you can add an edging lace?
Edges of bed sheets, pillowcases, baby blankets, baby frocks, hems of skirts, blouses, table cloths, around the sleeves, and necks of frocks.
There are so many designs of edging laces, very fine, thin laces which are crocheted by fine threads. Sometimes, broader ones are crocheted with thicker yarns.
I have given written instructions for this vintage edging lace and there is a video directing you to another one.

For this purpose we have to crochet a long chain, joining the loops of ch7 . First, join the same colour yarn to the beginning loop with a knot and an sc. Then make 7 ch and join to the next loop with single crochet. Continue to the end of loops.
